5 – Installing and Setting up Windows Subsystem for Linux on Windows 10

Requirements:

1 – Windows 10 Version 1607 or above and 64-bit
2 – Internet Connection

As I mentioned above that Linux Users also needs to follow, Linux users does not need to follow all steps, I will tell which steps Linux users has to follow.

To install Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) on Windows 10 follow the steps, also you can refer to image / screen shot gallery below:

  1. Go to Run window (Start + R) and type winver and press enter.
  2. Verify that your Windows Version is 1607 or above. If not Update Windows. If yes close the window.
  3. Go to Start and type Turn Windows features On or Off.
  4. Select Windows Subsystem for Linux from the Turn Windows Features on or Off List and click OK.
  5. Once installed, restart your machine.
  6. After restarting, go to Windows Store App or Microsoft Store App.
  7. Type Ubuntu in Search of Store App.
  8. Select Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
  9. Click Get or Install and wait for download and installation to finish.

Now let’s setup Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

If you have not closed Store App, you can click on Launch button or if you have closed the app, you can go to Start menu and type or look for Ubuntu and click on Ubuntu. This will launch WSL and Ubuntu. For the first time it will take couple of minutes to initialize. Once initializes it will ask you to create a user, so go ahead and create a user and give it a password. Once done, you got Linux running on your Windows.
